Your weekly update from the Iowa Medical Society

May 10, 2024

Three Cheers for Physician Advocacy!

The Iowa Medical Society government relations team has remained hard at work after the 2024 legislative session. This week and last week, IMS staff, physician leaders and members were present at the Capitol to witness Governor Kim Reynolds sign three IMS championed pieces of healthcare legislation including, SF 477 relating to Internationally-Trained Physician Licensure, HF 626 relating to Non-medical switching and SF 2251 relating to the Medicaid 12-month postpartum extension.

IMS is proud to see the passage of these bills as they are part of our priorities to expand physician workforce, improve access to care and reduce administrative red tape.

Upcoming: Cedar Rapids Blitz

Join us in Cedar Rapids on Wednesday, May 22. IMS leadership, including our President and President-Elect, will be in attendance to meet with members, answer questions, and hear what's on your mind. Our goal is to learn more about how we can best serve Iowa physicians.

Please reach out to Heather Lee, hlee@iowamedicial.org to schedule a meeting.

Following our meetings with area physicians and healthcare leaders, legislative updates, and visits with other clinics and providers, the day will be capped with a networking reception hosted at Biaggi's Ristorante Italiano at 5:00pm.

Ethics in Healthcare Conference 2024

With the steady introduction of more treatment options and biotechnologies, an increasing number and range of ethical challenges in health care are emerging. The Ethics in Healthcare Conference is designed to help professionals meet these challenges through their work as clinicians, members of ethics committees or ethics consult teams, and administrators.

The conference,  sponsored by the Program in Bioethics and Humanities and the Carver College of Medicine, University of Iowa, will take place Friday, May 31, 2024.

Sessions will include the following topics:

  • a primer on normative ethics
  • moral resilience in nursing and healthcare
  • screening for alcohol/illicit drugs in adolescent trauma patients
  • ethical issues in the use of artificial intelligence in healthcare

Participants made the conference a genuine time of engagement, rather than just an opportunity to be informed. Benefit from the wealth of experience, depth of insight, and range of perspectives that has been apparent during past conferences.
