Chapter Chat: LGBTQ+ Inclusivity & Cancer Care:
This training is a foundational course designed to build understanding of the LGBTQ community while fostering the skills and habits necessary to become an inclusive LGBTQ ally. The training covers essential information about LGBTQ identities and terminology, including topics related to gender, sexual orientation, and gender expression. In addition, the program includes a cancer care module that highlights best practices for meeting the needs of LGBTQ+ cancer patients and addresses the disparities this population experiences in relation to cancer.
Learning Objectives:
- Describe LGBTQ terminology and identities, including sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression.
- Review best practices and recommendations for meeting the needs of LGBTQ patients in a cancer care setting, including appropriate intake and screening, insurance protocols, and wrap-around services.
- Define and utilize best practices for LGBTQ inclusivity within the context of cancer care, including gender-neutral language, pronouns, and the art of the apology
- Identify barriers to care for LGBTQ+ cancer patients and disparities within the community
Speaker: Cecilia Martinez
Cecilia Martinez (They/Them/Elle) is a Program Coordinator with One Iowa. Born in Mexico, Cecilia and their family moved to Iowa in 1997 and have been here since. They graduated from Simpson College in 2018 and have worked with the LGBTQ community since high school. They are passionate about equity and access across the board for underrepresented communities across Iowa.
Language access is an important part of their work. Being bilingual in both Spanish and English, Cecilia often works to help translate or interpret information for Spanish speaking folks. In their free time they enjoy playing video games. making art. and being chronically online.
This training will be a hybrid offering. In-person is provided to DMU PIG students. Doors will open at 12:00 PM with the training starting at 12:15PM.
