Description

Every Baby, Every Sleep:

Reducing the risk of SIDS and SUIDs

an Iowa AAP Chapter Chat

Join us for an important discussion on infant safe sleep and the prevention of sleep-related infant deaths. Learn how evolving terminology around SIDS and SUID shapes understanding and review current AAP safe sleep recommendations and implementation in practice. Drawing on recent Iowa research, the session will also highlight common barriers families face in implementing safe sleep practices and discuss strategies providers can use to deliver effective, family-centered safe sleep education.

Objectives:

  • Discuss the differing terminology of SIDS and SUID to understand the influence of the terminology on perceptions of SIDS, safe sleep, and other accidental sleep related deaths.
  • Review current AAP recommendations on safe sleep while considering caretaker interpretations and understandings of recommendations.
  • Examine real-life barriers to safe sleep implementation for families and other obstacles providers must address to provide effective safe sleep education from new Iowa research.
