Every Minute Matters: Building Heart Safe Schools with Project ADAM: Iowa Heartland
Objectives:
- Understand the magnitude and time-sensitive nature of Sudden Cardiac Arrest, including survival implications of early CPR and defibrillation.
- Describe the evidence supporting CPR-AED programs in schools, including improved survival when AEDs and trained responders are on-site.
- Identify the core components of a Heart Safe School and Cardiac Emergency Response Plan, and how Project ADAM supports implementation at the local level.
Speakers:
Dr. Gary Beasley, MD, FAAP
Dr. Gary Beasley is a pediatric cardiologist in Iowa City, Iowa. He received his medical degree from Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine and has been in practice 6 years. He specializes in pediatric heart failure, cardio-oncology, mechanical circulatory support, and heart transplantation. He currently serves as the Medical Director for the Pediatric Heart Failure and Transplant program and is the Co-Medical Director for Project ADAM: Iowa Heartland.
Trudy Pierick, ARNP
Trudy Pierick, MSN, ARNP, is a nurse practitioner in cardiology and the Department of Pediatrics. She provides care at Stead Family Children's Hospital. She also serves as the Co-Medical Director for Project ADAM: Iowa Heartland.
Brenda Haag, RN, BSN, CPN
Brenda K. Erichsen Haag, RN, BSN, PCN is a Nurse Coordinator who specializes in adult and pediatric services at UI Health Care.
